Finding somewhere to live is an essential step in the organization of your mobility<\/strong>. Apart from anything else, it’s one of the conditions for obtaining your visa<\/strong>.
Looking for accommodation, above all at the start of the academic year, can be a lengthy, difficult process. We advise you not to wait until the last minute<\/strong> to start your search.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are plenty of housing possibilities<\/strong> in Lorraine. But if your stay’s going to be a short one <\/strong>(between 6 and 12 months) we recommend that you opt for \u00ab\u00a0all included\u00a0\u00bb accommodation<\/strong> such as a furnished flat or CROUS university residence (Cit\u00e9 U), which requires fewer moving-in formalities<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In France, before you move into your accommodation, you have to sign a rental agreement<\/strong> (also called \u00ab\u00a0bail\u00a0\u00bb). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In general, rent is paid at the beginning of each month<\/strong>. As proof of payment, you can ask your lessor for a receipt, known as a \u00ab\u00a0quittance de loyer<\/em>\u00ab\u00a0.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If your arrival <\/strong>in France is delayed<\/strong>, for example because of a problem in obtaining your visa, you will not be exempt from paying the rent from the date of entry into your accommodation<\/strong> as indicated in the rental agreement<\/strong> you have signed. In all cases, please inform your landlord <\/strong>or the organism that manages your accommodation<\/strong> that your arrival has been postponed.<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

In France, management of \u00ab\u00a0Cit\u00e9 U\u00a0\u00bb <\/strong>student residences is not directly attached to the universities themselves, but is one of the responsibilites<\/strong> of the CROUS (Centre R\u00e9gional des \u0152uvres Universitaires et Scolaires <\/em>\/ Regional Center for Student Affairs)<\/strong>, whose services aim to improve students’ living conditions (catering, student grants and jobs, cultural activities, etc.). Such accommodation is located near university campuses<\/strong> and is an ideal solution <\/strong>for students on small budgets<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The CROUS provides basic or renovated 9- to 15-m\u00b2 rooms. At minimum<\/strong>, they’re equipped with<\/strong> a sink, a cupboard, a desk, one or two chairs, and a single bed with mattress, blanket and pillow. Blankets and pillows are sometimes<\/em> also provided, but<\/strong> you should always check with your residence before<\/em> your arrival<\/strong> that this is the case. If not, ask if you can hire <\/strong>a blanket and pillow.<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

Open to all students, apartments <\/strong>in student residences can be rented at any time of the year<\/strong>, sometimes even for short durations<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apartments <\/strong>are aleady equipped <\/strong>and furnished<\/strong>,  ready to move into. They each have a bathroom, a small equipped kitchen and a main living area with bed, desk, etc.
What makes them different from Cit\u00e9 U residences are the services provided in addition to accommodation<\/strong>. Some of them are included in the rent, such as access to a gym and the Internet, others are optional and for a fee, such as car park and apartment cleaning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last but not least, student residences are usually located near <\/strong>Universit\u00e9 de Lorraine’s main campuses<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n
