ORION is the programme on the Lorraine public research site that opens the doors of science to you! It aims to train you in research from BAC+2 onwards, offering numerous opportunities to discover and practise research. In addition, ORION offers funding for your pathway, including excellence scholarships for M2 and internship stipends.
Our Team

Objectives
ORION aims to enable students to discover and practise research. It works to develop a student community capable of meeting the challenges of tomorrow.

Exposure to research takes various forms: dedicated courses, excellence practicals on LIE’s flagship platforms, thematic research schools, innovation workshops, multidisciplinary research clubs (student–researcher clubs), internships in university laboratories, international immersion in the research structures of our academic partners abroad; and is supported by dedicated funding (excellence scholarships, internship stipends, and mobility support).
Lorraine Initiative of Excellence
ORION supports the Lorraine Initiative of Excellence (ex-LUE) in developing the international leadership of the Lorraine site in engineering around six economic and societal challenges: the materials value chain; sustainable management of natural resources and the environment; future energy and the energy transition; trust in digital technology; health and support for ageing; and knowledge engineering.
Awardee of the “Programme d’Investissement d’Avenir”
ORION was selected on 1st July 2020 under the call for projects “Structuring training through research in initiatives of excellence” (SFRI) of the Programme d’Investissement d’Avenir (France 2030). Endowed with €18.5 million over nine years, it will help raise awareness and train students in research by offering them a more diversified environment.
CONSTRUCTION OF THE PROGRAMME
ORION is designed with a progression from discovering research (BAC+2), then practising it (from BAC+3 to BAC+5), to becoming researchers (PhD). The main distinctive features of ORION are, on the one hand, the emphasis on practising research and, on the other, the intention to mix audiences (Faculties and Engineering Schools), levels (from BAC+2 to the doctorate), disciplines, and nationalities to create a student community engaged on a research trajectory.

ORION Programme Partners
ORION’s partners welcome the success of these projects, which reinforce the positive momentum of the Lorraine site as a whole in the service of education, research, innovation, and economic development.
