Nomos Club

The club’s main themes will focus on the different paradigms of public action found in economics, law, and contemporary political philosophy in order to identify their characteristics. More specifically, the traditional concepts of these disciplines are being disrupted by the arrival of “new objects” and new mechanisms. To take just a few examples: can nature be a legal subject? Can it carry utility? Can algorithms or robots be held responsible? How are economic and legal rationalities modified by the existence of cognitive biases? Are economist and legal experts rational? So many questions that challenge the classic modalities of public intervention through public law. These questions will be at the heart of the club’s reflections and actions.

The team

  • Guillaume PRESSÉ – PhD student in public law – IRENEE
  • Daniel ZARAMA – PhD student in economics – BETA
  • Benjamin FARGEAUD – Professor of public law – IRENEE
  • Samuel FEREY – Professor of economics – BETA

Join us!

  • Discover the laboratories to show students the concrete conditions of research; take part in scientific events of the two host laboratories
  • The presentation of an article by its author to the club: this will both address a specific research theme and show students how a scientific article is developed
  • Reading workshops around a timely book related to the themes studied
  • Students in the club could be tasked with designing and organizing an annual conference on a current topic with one or more invited researchers
  • The club could broaden students’ horizons by enabling them to attend conferences or study days outside the University of Lorraine and visit institutions

In practice

Based on bi-monthly meetings, the program would provide student members with substantial insight into what research in the social sciences and humanities entails.

Club meetings may be held alternately on the premises of IRENEE, BETA, and the Faculty of Law, Economics and Management:

  • Meeting rooms
  • Lecture hall
  • Documentation room
