I am a student; why do an internship in a research laboratory?
Undertaking an internship in a research laboratory offers a unique opportunity to acquire practical skills, explore specific fields, develop a professional network, and gain a deeper understanding of the world of scientific research. This can significantly contribute to your academic and professional development.
- Acquisition of practical skills specific to your field of study.
- Explore the research environment, understand how it operates in practice, and determine whether it aligns with your professional aspirations.

- Direct participation in ongoing research projects.
- Develop transferable skills: beyond technical abilities, you will build cross-cutting skills such as problem-solving, scientific communication, time management, and collaboration.

Scientific Community & Staff FAQ
What can creating a club bring to my laboratory?
- ORION can fund an internship within your laboratory if it is awarded to a student who is a member of an ORION club. This means you can host interns whose stipend is not paid by your laboratory but by ORION. Funding is approved by a committee composed of ORION club leads.
- Your laboratory gains visibility and recognition through the establishment of this club.
- The club fosters interdisciplinary activities and supports your laboratory’s research endeavours.
- Scientific mediation activities are part of club actions. As a result, your laboratory can be highlighted through these activities, targeting the student community as well as the general public.
How can I host ORION interns?
Several types of internships can be funded by ORION:
- The Masters Grants programme, which funds a research stay for an international student with a strong interest in research. These research stays are paid by ORION.
- ORION can fund an internship within your laboratory if it is awarded to a student who is a member of an ORION club. This allows you to host interns whose stipend is paid by ORION rather than your laboratory. Funding is approved by a committee composed of ORION club leads.
- ORION funds internships for ORION Excellence Scholars, provided they take place in a laboratory on the Lorraine research site (University of Lorraine, CNRS, CHRU de Nancy, GeorgiaTech, INRIA, INRAE, INSERM, AgroParisTech).
I would like to implement actions to promote research or my laboratory. Can ORION support me, and how?
ORION issues two calls for expressions of interest per year to fund all or part of events that introduce students to research.
Are Excellence practicals (TP) open to all levels or reserved for specific cohorts?
For lab practicals (TP), programme directors are free to choose the target audience for TP of Excellence projects. Typically, these are either M1 or M2 cohorts, from a specific pathway or multiple ones.
Are Excellence practicals (TP) scheduled throughout the year based on the number of participants, or must they replace existing practicals?
TP offered under the TP of Excellence prgramme will become UE integrated into the programme syllabi. They will therefore not replace existing practicals in current programmes but will complement them.
Are Excellence practicals (TP) automatically renewed from one year to the next? Must a new application be submitted each year?
For renewal of TP funding, we will request a financial and budget report two months after the TP has taken place. Renewal is not automatic; it will be granted following evaluation.
