Tandem / e-Tandem

The Language Resource Center provides the possibility of participating in language tandems / e-tandems.

WHAT IS A tandem / e-tandem?

  • 2 people with different mother tongues undertake to meet each other on a regular basis to exchange in their own languages and help each other learn.
  • The 2 language partners are completely autonomous : it’s up to them how often and where they meet, what they talk about and how they assess progress.
  • tandem is an exchange between a French-speaking student and an international student in mobility at UL. An e-tandem is an exchange between a UL student and a student at a foreign university partnering the program.

The objective is both linguistic and cultural, introducing each participant to the other’s culture while practicing foreign languages.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The Language Center provides you with:

  • A tandem with a UL student and/or a student from a UL partner foreign university
  • A special advisory service for participants in the program
  • Language learning resources on EDOlang (the language resource center) or at our language centers
  • An initial common meeting is held for all participants so that you can get to know your partner. A midterm meeting takes place during the semester to help you get the best out of your e-tandem partnership.
  • Optional, a certificate of participation in the program, under certain conditions (see ARCHE site)

You must do your part by:

  • Setting aside time to communicate with your partner (1 or 2 hours a week)
  • Committing to a minimum of 6 weeks
  • sharing time equally between the two languages during your meetings (50% of the time in French and 50% of the time in the other language)

WHAT LANGUAGES ARE ON OFFER?

For a tandem, all languages are possible, depending on the international students registered.

For an e-tandem, our partners are:

  • German: Freie Universitat Berlin and Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität de Münster (Germany)
  • English: Newcastle University, University of Leeds, Manchester Metropolitain University (United Kingdom), Alliance Française de Pune (India), Fordham University (United States)
  • Chinese: Sichuan Southwest College of Civil Aviation (China)
