Complementary or mutual health insurance for researchers

In France, the Assurance Maladie (Health Insurance aka Social Security) does not reimburse all your healthcare costs. Complementary (or mutual) health insurance covers the remaining costs to be met by the policy holder.

In order to benefit from optimal reimbursement of your healthcare costs, you can take out complementary or mutual heath insurance. It is not mandatory but it is strongly recommended.

Reimbursements vary depending on the contract and type of complementary health insurance chosen. They reimburse part or all of the costs not covered by the Assurance Maladie.

There are 2 types of complementary health insurance:

  • Complémentaire Santé Solidaire (C2S): managed directly by French Health Insurance, on social criteria. A simulator enables you to estimate your rights to C2S: access to simulator.
  • Complementary health insurance provided by private (mutual) insurance companies: before choosing a mutual insurance company, we recommend that you consult the mutual insurance purchase guide in order to find the best policy according to your needs and budget.
