In France, Assurance Maladie (Health Insurance aka Social Security) doesn’t reimburse all your healthcare costs. Complementary (or mutual) health insurance covers the remaining costs to be met by the policy holder.
In order to benefit from optimal reimbursement of your healthcare costs, you can take out complementary or mutual heath insurance. It isn’t mandatory but it’s strongly recommended.

Premium rates vary depending on your situation (undergraduate or PhD student) and take account of a range of criteria: cover level chosen, income, age, status (salaried or not), etc.
Reimbursements vary depending on contract and type of complementary health insurance chosen. They reimburse part or all of the costs not covered by Assurance Maladie.
There are 2 types of complementary health insurance:
- Complémentaire Santé Solidaire (C2S): managed directly by French Health Insurance. A simulator enables you to estimate your rights to C2S: access to simulator.
