Planning and managing your budget

For a successful stay, make sure you have sufficient financial resources in relation to the cost of living in Lorraine.

Budget

Planning & management

Prepare your budget before your departure

To prepare your stay, we recommend that you draw up a monthly budget that takes account of accommodation, food, studies, transport, healthcare costs and leisure activities.

Don’t forget to include various expenses incurred before you arrive in France, such as reservation fee (€100) and deposit (about 1 month’s rent) if you want accommodation at the CROUS. These sums must be paid by bank card on the reservation website before your arrival in order to obtain the keys to your accommodation. You can recover the deposit when you leave your accommodation provided you haven’t done any damage to it.

If you’re a citizen of a non-European Union country

You’ll have to prove that you have a minimum of 615 euros a month in order to request a visa and residence permit. To do so, you must provide:

  • a grant certificate
  • OR a statement from a financial guarantor in France or abroad
  • OR a permanent irrevocable transfer order from your bank in your usual country of residence
  • OR a certificate of adequate credit balance in a bank account in France

To bear in mind :

Your studies must be financed prior to your arrival in France. As a citizen from a non-EU country, you’re allowed to work in France on an ancillary basis : 60% of annual working time, 50% for Algerian students.
