Open research

A university committed to open science

There is a whole team available to Université de Lorraine researchers and its partners to best support the necessary transition to Open Science, particularly under France’s National Plan for Open Science which, in 2018, set out the main objectives for the country to achieve in this regard.

Benefit from the complementary expertise of research data administrators, our data librarian and an engineer specialising in research data management. Take advantage of the advice and personalised guidance of the research support office to optimise your deposits in the open archive HAL and develop your open scholarly projects. Ask our bibliometrics specialists to produce assessments or find out about new opportunities.

Support open research

To coordinate all of these activities and inform the discussions of Université de Lorraine bodies, an Operational Committee for Open Publications (COPO) was set up in 2020. Please do contact its members if you have any queries: copo-contact@univ-lorraine.fr

Université de Lorraine has firmly committed to supporting open scholarship. It does this in two ways:

  • support for open-access platforms and journals, outside UL, meeting the criteria of research quality, transparency and fee-free for authors (SciPost, Erudit, OpenEdition, EPIGA, Open Library of Humanities, etc.)
  • methodological and financial support of the University’s journals wishing to transition to open access

Open Science at Université de Lorraine

Université de Lorraine has strongly endorsed Open Science since 2016 and opened its own institutional archive, HAL-UL. The University has made Open Science a key pillar of its 2018-2022 strategy.

Université de Lorraine has also undertaken an overhaul of its university press. EDUL, the name of the new publishing house established in 2021, aspires to make all of the scholarly research published available on an open-access basis. Find out more.

HAL

Université de Lorraine’s platform HAL launched in 2016 and became the University’s official bibliography in 2018. In addition to publication references, researchers are also encouraged to upload the full text of their papers there, whenever possible.

Thanks to these deposits, the publications gain from long-term archiving and greater visibility (not least because HAL is referenced in such databases and search engines as Google Scholar). The open-access dissemination requirements of the financial backers (ANR, ERC, Horizon Europe) are also met in this way.

Lastly, on the basis of a single deposit, HAL can also update an online CV, ORCID record or lab website, and makes it easier to export bibliographic records. The University librarians are available to guide you through this process, in whichever way is most convenient for you (workshops, focus on a specific point, on-duty in the units, one-to-one appointments, in person or virtually).
