Performance sport

Fulfil both your sporting and academic potential

Elite athletes need to be able to adjust their study pathway in light of their commitments (training, competitions, etc.) so as to achieve both sporting and academic excellence.

To help them to succeed on three levels (academically, in their sport and on a personal level through social ties and career opportunities), Université de Lorraine has set up a “performance sport” scheme. This is aimed at supporting talented student athletes throughout their university studies.

It has been designed for those awarded elite student athlete or student athlete status at Université de Lorraine after examination of their application by a technical committee.

Who can benefit from special arrangements for athletes at Université de Lorraine?

List 1: Elite Student Athlete (ESHN)

To be eligible, these conditions must be met:

  • Feature in the ministerial lists of elite referees/athletes for the current year: Espoirs, relève, sénior, élite, reconversion, Sportifs des Collectifs Nationaux: SCN (students on the ministerial lists on 1 November will also be included).
  • Be part of a Federal Performance Project (PPF), which implements the high-performance federal strategy and has to comprise two separate programmes, forming the backbone of the preparations for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
  • Be a member of a training centre of a professional club.

List 2: Elite Student Athlete (ESHN)

Meet the sports or performance-related criteria (list below): these must be justified for the academic year 2021-2022.

In tennis, admission to the Centre National Universitaire de Tennis (CNUT) automatically entitles students to this status.

How is the status awarded?

A committee made up of Université de Lorraine representatives and its sports body partners (CREPS, DRJSCS and LGESU) examines applications for ESHN status.

Expectations & obligations of elite student athletes

  • Complete an application for LIST 1 or 2 status, which will be examined by the performance sport committee.
  • Obtain your licence from the Université de Lorraine Sports Association to be able to represent the University at FFSU competitions (compulsory for LIST 2).
  • Make sure the request for flexible arrangements for learning and assessment is filled out and signed by the faculty or course director.
  • Communicate your significant sports achievements and their coverage in the media.

Possible adjustments/arrangements for elite student athletes

  • Exemption from paying tuition fees in the second year if the first academic year is split into two.
  • Dispensations for accessing certain sectors.
  • Splitting academic years and retaining grades (e.g.: 1 year split into 2).
  • Possibility of attending certain classes remotely.
  • Priority in the composition of tutorial/practical groups.
  • Exemption from core classes (if invited to a national or international selection, upon justification).
  • Adjustments to the exam timetable (if invited to a national or international selection, upon justification).
  • Possibility of studying modules from the year above.
  • Adjustments to the exam timetable to be able to attend an FFSU or federal competition

List of supporting documents to include in your application (incomplete applications will not be considered):

  • Programme certificate
  • Proof of the level of performance
  • Annual calendar
  • Cover letter
  • Photo

Please note:
The proof of level of performance cannot be a document signed by your club. It must highlight the exact level required by the status criteria (see more details depending on the sport). It must be signed by a representative of the federation or DRAJES (LEA regional delegation for youth, engagement and sport), which can certify the level of performance. It may also be a screenshot of an overview of the federal performances meeting the eligible criteria for obtaining ESHN status.

Contacts

Throughout your studies, the performance sport scheme coordinators will be available to help and advise all elite student athletes. They can:
• tell you about how to obtain the ESHN status
• act as a go-between regarding your lecturers/professors
• answer any queries about dual sporting & academic student pathways
