International cooperation

Université de Lorraine and its on-site partners strive to set the stage for sound, enduring partnerships to shore up the international priorities of our laboratories.

Enduring joint ventures

With that in mind, we have cemented a dozen strategic partnerships, sometimes with funds directly earmarked for joint projects (one recent example is the partnership with Tohoku in Japan) and at others by creating joint centres or other forms of enduring joint ventures. In particular, we are strengthening the policy bearing on joint laboratories to which we aim to lend greater support for developing their multi-year strategies. Thanks to the schemes designed jointly under the LUE initiative, we also intend to continue financing theses associated with international partnerships, facilitate international mobility for our researchers (Widen Horizons programme) or PhD students (DREAM programme) and keep supporting our new international students through the Welcome@Lorraine programme.

Various connections implying a world map

Major strategic international partnerships

University of California San Diego and Georgia Tech Atlanta (United States): with these two universities, joint research has been stepped up on the subject of materials. In practice, this has led to the establishment of an International Associated Laboratory (LIA) with UCSD and close cooperation with Georgia Tech Atlanta, strengthened with Georgia Tech Lorraine, the Georgia Institute of Technology’s European Campus.
– Tohoku University (Japan): a sound partnership has been forged with this university, for which specific resources have been allocated for the development of joint projects, not least on the subject of materials.
– The Ressources 21 Laboratory of Excellence (Labex) has consolidated a promising partnership with the Sustainable Minerals Institute of the University of Queensland (Australia) and with Sun Yat-Sen University (China).
– The ARBRE Labex has bolstered ties with Beijing Forestry University (China).

LONG-STANDING PARTNERSHIPS

In the energy field, Université de Lorraine is a long-standing partner of the International University of Rabat, through our active involvement in the education of engineering students, and more recently the development of joint research projects. In the healthcare sector, there is an enduring partnership with China, through Wuhan University in particular.

International Research Partnership

This new scheme has been rolled out to strengthen previously-established international scientific collaboration involving its research units. By providing a framework for the flagship partnerships between Université de Lorraine laboratories and foreign laboratories, it is helping to structure international research cooperation at the University. With the advantage of building on the momentum in terms of scientific exchange and transfer of these partnerships.

Our European partnerships

In recent years, the Lorraine site has embraced an influence and networking strategy at European level by fully engaging in associations and major European partnerships which are shaping and defining key themes in line with the challenges of LUE. Accordingly, UL is a member of two Knowledge and Innovation Communities (KICs) of the European Institute of Innovation & Technology (EIT): EIT RawMaterials with an innovation hub hosted on our premises, and InnoEnergy. Not to mention several leading partnerships and associations on energy with EERA, on hydrogen with FCH-JU, forestry-wood with EFI, steel with ESTEP, energy efficiency and resources in industry with SPIRE and the bioeconomy with the first initiatives with BBI.
The aim is to clearly position the site as a key contributor to the European Green Deal.

Cross-border cooperation

Cross-border cooperation is also a defining characteristic of the site, not least through its involvement in the University of the Greater Region (UniGR). Find out more.
This alliance has developed links between cross-border economic growth and research. Having established a centre of expertise on cross-border dynamics (Center of Border Studies), it is now shoring up a new trend on the circular economy. In the field of cybersecurity, a partnership has been forged with the Helmholtz Center for Information Security (CISPA) in Saarbrücken, with the ultimate goal of creating a fully-fledged Franco-German research centre.

International publications

The number of publications with international co-authors is climbing significantly. Today, nearly one in every two publications is achieved with an international partner, especially in such themes as science & technology or the environment.
