Our European aim with EURECA-PRO

The Université de Lorraine joined the European alliance EURECA-PRO, which now comprises nine universities. In order to maintain its status as a European university, this European scientific network is pursuing its strategy focused on the major challenge of the ecological transition. This strategy responds to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12, “Sustainable consumption and production”.

Already a winner of the “European University” call for projects, EURECA-PRO now brings together nine universities located in eight European countries and intends to carry out its strategic actions in training, research and innovation around responsible consumption and production, with the ambition of positioning itself in a strong and visible way on the theme of the circular economy and the environmental transition. With more than 62,000 students, the Université de Lorraine has doubled the number of students in the consortium.

The integration of the Université de Lorraine into this alliance is part of the response being prepared to the new call for proposals within the framework of Erasmus+ launched by the European Commission on 30 November 2021, to support the continued deployment of the European Universities Initiative, in particular by inviting the existing alliances to propose an extension of their work, which could include the integration of new members.

« As our disciplines and our multidisciplinary vocation are geared towards the major challenges of sustainable development, we are perfectly in step with the European consortium. It is an honour for us to join this collective project to become a European university. »

Hélène Boulanger, President of the Université de Lorraine

Multidisciplinarity and systems engineering for a European university

The Université de Lorraine’s membership of EURECA-PRO aligns perfectly with the institution’s strategic positioning on an interdisciplinary approach to the major transitions of the 21st century. Multidisciplinarity and systems engineering are strongly embedded in the university’s DNA and have been since its creation.

The strategic issues surrounding the SDGs are becoming increasingly important for the Université de Lorraine and joining EURECA-PRO contributes to this.

EURECA-PRO: leader in interdisciplinary research and innovation in the circular economy

The EURECA-PRO alliance comprises Montanuniversität Leoben (Austria), Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg (Germany), Technical University of Crete (Greece), Universidad de León (Spain), Silesian University of Technology (Poland), Universitatea din Petrosani (Romania), Mittweida University of Applied Sciences (Germany) and Hasselt University (Belgium).

The nine partners, including the Université de Lorraine, aim to enable students and staff to study, teach and carry out research in the field of responsible consumption and production. This will include a common approach to higher education and research issues around SDG 12, the creation of new interdisciplinary degrees with integrated mobility opportunities across the three study cycles, leading to joint European degrees, and the enhancement of student and staff mobility between the partners to promote integration, multilingualism and European identity.

The long-term vision of EURECA-PRO is to be the European educational hub and leader in interdisciplinary research and innovation in sustainable consumption and production of resources, goods and materials by 2040. This will include technological, ecological, policy, economic and societal aspects and their transfer into society and industry to achieve the targeted CO₂ reduction and associated sustainability practices of the EU Green Pact by 2050.
