Intercultural competence

Université de Lorraine is an inclusive university which meets the sustainable development goals as part of the UNESCO 2030 Agenda. Harnessing our inherent capacity for cross-cutting dialogue between scientific disciplines, at Université de Lorraine we are broadening our teaching thanks to our multifaceted international strategy, led by all, for all.

Intercultural engagement is a natural part of Université de Lorraine’s international strategy. Because it is not possible for everyone to gain an international experience abroad, let’s bring the international experience to the University (internationalisation@home). The importance of intercultural awareness is fully taken on board in the international focus of our courses, by meeting the current needs and future issues shaping society and offering comparative perspectives of our interconnected, multicultural world for our students and staff.

With 10,000 international students, Université de Lorraine sets significant store by the development of its students’ and staff’s intercultural competence. Over and above the language benefits, cultural exchanges are a wellspring of shared experiences, knowledge, hard and soft skills alike.

Accordingly, we provide our staff and students with intercultural skills training, as well as other initiatives including the Buddy System (when a local student mentors an international student). Community festivities for everyone to get together are also organised, at key times in the year for different cultures (Mexican Day of the Dead or Chinese New Year for example).

The Buddy System for international students

Université de Lorraine, in partnership with ESN France and ESN Nancy, invites you to join the Buddy System programme!

If you’d like to be involved in a rewarding experience on a human level, in which you can share your culture and devote some of your time to helping an international student settle in, then look no further than our Buddy System mentoring programme!

Buddy System is an online platform which pairs international students with local students through a mentoring programme. It will put you in touch with an international student who matches your profile, based on the various criteria you will have filled in beforehand.

Mentoring a student is above all about gaining international insight, into a different culture from your own, with an opportunity to speak a different language and perhaps prepare for an upcoming period abroad…

You can sign up online now to mentor an international student during the second semester. Why not also join in at the start of the next academic year!

Institut Confucius

Institut Confucius is a Franco-Chinese institute for university cooperation that promotes discovery and exchange. Its Chinese partners are the Office of Chinese Language Council International (Hanban) and Wuhan University of Technology. It also receives strong backing from regional institutions. Ever since it was founded back in 2012, through its wide variety of actions it has successfully contributed to developing the university and local intercultural environment as well as Franco-Chinese cooperation.

Institut Confucius is a thriving cross-cultural hub for training and information. Its activities give everyone (students, staff, the general public and companies for example) an opportunity to learn more about the Chinese language and culture through culture, language, sports or recreation workshops. It is also a forum open to everyone. There is a documentation room containing 3,000 educational and cultural publications that the general public are welcome to come and use.
