Research integrity

a fundamental value at université de lorraine

Our research is in keeping with the values set out in the charter of the French Office for Research Integrity (OFIS) .
Although breaches of research integrity are rare, it nevertheless struck as necessary to regulate alert and examination processes with the creation of a research integrity delegation at Université de Lorraine.
All of our PhD students now benefit from compulsory training on research integrity.

RESEARCH INTEGRITY DELEGATION

Research integrity concerns the rules and values governing the researcher’s activity, to ensure that it is honest and scientifically rigorous. It bears on a number of areas that have more to do with the conduct of research than ethics per se. The research integrity delegation is responsible for processing any breaches of integrity that are referred to it. These breaches concern all disciplines.

Research integrity delegation deals with:

  • Plagiarism, which is now easier to detect in theses thanks to the software implemented at UL;
  • research fraud: fabrication or falsification of data and results;
  • Questionable practices: position of authors in publications or no authors, embellishment of results, unauthorised use of data, etc.;
  • Conflicts of interest: failure to declare interests;
  • Conflicts between individuals.

The research integrity delegation was set up in 2016 to process any breaches of integrity that are referred to it. To examine the case files, it works with a committee on which the Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research, the Legal Affairs Director and two members of the Scientific Council sit.

For the delegation, training is the best way to strengthen the research integrity of our University. Accordingly, the national order of 25 May 2016 stipulates that doctoral schools “ensure that each PhD student receives training in research ethics and integrity”. It believes that training right from the first years of higher education is key to improving the situation further.
