Research & education for producing, imparting and sharing knowledge

Université de Lorraine is wholeheartedly committed to producing, imparting and sharing knowledge. By harnessing its dynamic research scene, it plays an active part in designing high-level courses, creating knowledge and utilising its findings for society’s benefit.
To achieve its ambition, the University first and foremost champions its core values and places students and staff front and centre in its endeavours. In 2016, team efforts culminated in the preparation of a Charter setting out Université de Lorraine’s core values: universality, creativity, reflexivity, solidarity and responsibility. Université de Lorraine applies these values as part of its social responsibility.
Tackling the key issues shaping society

This responsibility involves tackling our society’s major challenges: demographic challenges (rapid demographic growth, global hunger and poverty, health, migrations, supercities), digital revolution, climate (environment, biodiversity, energy, energy transition), changing organisations and institutions, etc. The solutions to these challenges must be cross-cutting – at once social, human, legal, cultural, health-related, economic and technical. This only accentuates the relevance of Université de Lorraine’s vision ever since its founding – which is encapsulated in its motto: “Innovation through the dialogue between knowledge fields”. It is also responsible for educating the generation that will have to manage these challenges.
As part of the initiative Lorraine Université d’Excellence (LUE), it grounds research and education in a multidisciplinary approach to provide fitting global solutions to 6 societal challenges: control of the entire materials value chain, sustainable management of natural resources and the environment, development of energies of the future and support with energy transition, trust in the digital world, engineering to serve health care and ageing, language and knowledge engineering.
A university actively involved in its wider community

Université de Lorraine plays a key role within the wider community (Lorraine, Grand-Est and Greater Region), not only through its education and research activities, but also thanks to the meaningful cultural, economic and societal contributions it makes. It is instrumental in helping its institutional and socio-economic partners to thrive by facilitating their access to academic expertise.

By playing a role alongside them, it contributes to two major ambitions: economic growth and making culture accessible in the broadest sense of the term. With that in mind, educating citizens to be open to the world, driven by erudition and humanist values, is enshrined in its core values. By countering the destructive inward-looking attitudes that are currently undermining the balances of society and partnership between countries, Université de Lorraine is also fully attuned to its international environment.
